- ATCO Electric Ltd: Geotechnical Site Investigation
- Overview
In October of 2012 under Stewart Weir (ZALIG Team) completed a geotechnical site investigation & report for a proposed expansion at the 707S St. Paul & 819S Whitby Substations on the behalf of ATCO Electric Ltd.
- Project Goal
The purpose of the site investigation was to address the following scope of work:
- Determine the subsurface soil profiles and their geotechnical characteristics.
- Groundwater and sloughing conditions.
- Field and laboratory investigation results for the design and construction of the proposed expansion.
- Determine recommendations for frost heave protection and erosion control.
- The investigation included drilling three boreholes to 15 m to 20 m below ground surface at 707S St. Paul and one borehole to 20 m at 819S Whitby Substation.
- The substations were live energized stations that required the supervision of a qualified ATCO Electric Ltd. safety representative in order to monitor safe limits of approach.
- Results
- Onsite drilling of 4 boreholes was performed.
Laboratory testing included:
- Moisture Content ASTM D2216 (94 samples)
- Sulphate Analysis ASTM 26/96 C1580 (8 samples)
- Atterberg Limits ASTM D4318 (8 samples)
- Unconfined Compressive Strength ASTM D2166 (5 samples)
